Finishing board: selection and use of wooden parts for room decoration. Unedged board finishing

Protecting the log walls from the outside from destruction by rain, sunlight, wind and frost is done in various ways. The most environmentally friendly is wood cladding on the facade of the house. The overlapping arrangement of the boards creates an obstacle to the flow of air. Water flows down on the protruding surface without getting into the casing and walls. Finishing a board is expensive. Its advantages are the naturalness of the material, the comfortable environment inside the house, and the unique beauty of the natural material.

Covering the house to protect the load-bearing wall

It was necessary to sheathe a wooden cottage. It’s Vadik’s turn to help me. We worked with him under his questions and my stories. My friend is not just a scientist, but a curious mathematician who wants to learn how to do everything with his own hands. We were preparing a wooden house outside for decoration, and I talked about where the wall cladding came from.

During the development of new lands, first America, then Australia, ships often crashed on reefs near unfamiliar shores. The immigrants trimmed their houses with wooden cladding from the sides. They used samples at opposite corners of the board and stacked them with approach, herringbone. The edge protruded outward over the lower bar. Water did not flow down the wall to the base, but dripped down from each board. Inside, the sheathing and wall remained dry.

Depending on the climate of the area inhabited by the settlers, lining the outside of the walls with an overlap with a shipboard protected the housing from various natural factors:

  • strong wind;
  • the scorching sun;
  • frost
  • rains;
  • heat.

Over time, board and beam finishes became popular. People appreciated not only practicality, but also the beauty of the wooden facade. It is easier and cheaper to change the most expensive cladding from the outside than to restore the walls.

Types of wood used for lapping

While we were cleaning the surface of the walls from dirt, I told a friend which types of wood are better suited for cladding on the outside.

  1. According to its characteristics, the larch finish is leading. Wood is moisture resistant. The degree of warping is lower than other rocks. Easy to handle and holds nails.
  2. Spruce has a natural resin impregnation and characteristics are slightly lower than larch. Numerous knots give a unique decorative look. Over time, cracks appear around them. Therefore, home decoration, outside spruce board is rare.
  3. The pine is very warped and quickly deteriorates. For cladding outside is not applicable.
  4. Hardwood looks beautiful and durable. It is difficult to handle. When driving nails, it may crack. The disadvantages include the high cost of the material.

Finishing the house outside can be done with a board with different degrees of processing:

  • slab lump represents the cut edge of a log with an oval surface;
  • the removed tip and the rough edges of the boardwalk;
  • unedged board has rounded raw ends on one side;
  • the angle and part of the end face remain uncut on the cut edge with a groove;
  • a cleanly edged board is completely processed and has the same dimensions along the entire length;
  • grooved with grooves of various shapes cut out along the entire length.

Overlapping is done with all kinds of materials listed. Untreated stacked oval surfaces outward and overlap the top. Butt joining along the length only processed planks. The rest with an overlap of 150 mm.

To give the walls a decorative look in ethnic and retro style, veneers can be placed on top of the board. Then the house looks old and fragile. Over time, thin strips of wood deform and fluff like frills.

Facade preparation and waterproofing

For several days we were preparing at home. Finishing the outside with a board requires protecting the walls from dampness. The logs were impregnated with a flame retardant, an antistatic agent and three layers of water repellent. Applied with brushes and rubbed well. All this slightly worsens the vapor permeability of the tree. But it protects the walls from fungus and makes it more resistant to moisture and even fire.

I simultaneously checked the basement waterproofing. On the foundation stone, moisture from the soil rises to the walls and above. The sheets of roofing material lay intact, protruding several millimeters beyond the plane of the wall. The blind area around the house was done after, when the walls and the basement were completed.

Covering the house with insulation

Sheathing can be attached directly to the logs with nails of length 80 - 100 mm. For warming, a crate is made of a wooden beam. Between the vertical racks, a heater is laid, closed by waterproofing. A board trim is mounted to the bar protruding above the minvata.

For waterproofing, a film is selected. Then holes are made in it near the racks for ventilation. You can use a special fabric that lets air through and repels water.

Facade decoration in our design

The walls of the house were quite warm. Finishing with an overlap board created additional thermal insulation. Therefore, after Vadik’s treatment of the walls with all the protective compounds outside, we waited until they were completely dry. Then did the following work.

  1. Along the entire perimeter, marking of vertical lines;
  2. Wooden screws were screwed on them with screws.
  3. Nailed on the top of the base low tide.
  4. Above it, a beam was laid with sides equal to the thickness of the skin board. It will provide an even inclination of the trim strips.
  5. The nails in the boards were hammered down and above with vertical racks. 2 cm retreated from the side end.

We started from the bottom row and from the corner began to move to the right and up. After completing the casing, installed in the corners of the house protective additional elements. The casing was placed on the window and doorways during the construction of the walls. We only need to adjust the size of the board so that it fits snugly against the frame.

Having finished the decoration, we went around the entire perimeter of the house, and sealed all the cracks and joints with sealant. I chose the color of the tree in the store.

We again took up the brushes. The antiseptic boards located on the overlapping wall were covered. Then for decoration with a glazing composition. He gave the tree a golden chocolate tint and highlighted the natural wood pattern.

Overlapping boards can be painted, varnished, waxed. This gives the finish a unique look. It all depends on your taste and the board used for cladding.

Overlapping siding

A quick and budget way to imitate lining with a lap board, to mount plastic and metal siding under a tree. You can make a metal profile crate and attach acrylic or vinyl panels to it. You can distinguish a "fake" only at close range.

Ventilated facades stand up to 20 years. Virtually no maintenance. But this is not a tree with its warmth and originality.

We began to sheathe the transport baths with a lap board (lining) or Christmas tree in 2014. And these were bath barrels, which we then called "Exclusive." Despite the fact that the "American" (this name was given the name to this technology for decorating facades) has been known since time immemorial in the States, Canada, and Scandinavia not long ago.

The technology is simple, proven, and the result looks spectacular. Suitable for outdoor decoration and houses, and baths, and any other buildings.

Here's how it looks live:

  Facade cladding technology by an American

Nothing complicated here. Whatever construction you sheathed, installation begins with the installation of guide rails. That is, we make a frame crate, on which we will fasten the lining. It is clear that since the finishing board is mounted horizontally, the guides are installed vertically. At the very bottom we nail a horizontal rail 20 mm wide - it sets the angle of inclination of the lining. Installation of boards is carried out from the bottom up.

They often ask the question, where to hammer nails when lining the facade with an overlap board - through 2 boards through, driving into the overlap? Or just the top board, driving a nail over the lap?

Different options are allowed. We make a secret mount. That is, nails are hammered in the upper part of the lining with a step of 20 cm at a distance of 1-1.5 cm from the edge. That is, when the next board lies on top, then the nails will not be visible.

We believe that this is the most reliable and aesthetic option.

  Pros and cons of mounting a Christmas tree lining

If you choose a facade finish, then, of course, sorting out the advantages and disadvantages of each option. The American has more pros than cons.

pros

Minuses

Cheapness

For trim, both edged and unedged planed boards are suitable. Better dry. Thickness can be from 15 to 25 mm, height 140-150 mm, length usually 600 mm. In retail, the price is for 1 pc. will be from 250 to 320 rubles, depending on size and quality. That is, a cube, tentatively, costs 13,000 rubles.

No matter how well the board is dried, it will still shrink. And this means there is a chance that she will "lead", will begin to twist.

How to treat: buy a good chamber drying board, check the moisture level with a moisture meter before buying.

Aesthetics

Herringbone plank looks very beautiful. It gives the building volume, originality and surroundings of the New World. Widely used in the architectural styles of "Hi-Tech", "Scandi", "Loft."

The complexity of installation

The board is quite narrow, so it will take a lot of time to tile it with a large front area. In addition, you need to monitor the size of the overlap, constantly check the level for the correct position.

Previously, people were far from steaming over lap boards for beauty. This had a perfectly justified sense - as water flowed down the board without flowing under the skin. Such facades remained in good shape for decades.

We also include thermal protection here. Due to the gaps between the finish and the wall of the building, an air cushion is formed. Air has a low thermal conductivity, which ensures the preservation of heat inside the building.

Wooden sores

    Darkening
    Even with impregnation and other modern paints and varnishes, over time, the little white and clean once darker board will darken. That is, you have to paint the facade every 2-3 years.

    Decay, mold, bark beetles
    If you neglect the chemical treatment, then sooner or later the board will begin to rot. And mold may also start, various bark beetles will strive to destroy your beauty.

Ventilation

Again, thanks to the gaps, excellent ventilation of the facade is ensured. This is very important when building a bath. Boards dry very quickly - condensation simply does not have time to form.

Perhaps this table can be supplemented. If you have any comments, please write in the comments on this article.

  Why did we choose the size of the board 145x19

We believe that this is the best option for finishing the transport baths. On large facades, a larger board looks better - 150-200 mm, and on smaller ones - smaller.

Too often, already ripples:

And here just right:

When choosing a board, we are guided by personal preferences. Someone may disagree with us.

The thickness of 19 mm is also chosen by chance. It depends on the size of the board, in our case 145 mm. The higher the height, the thicker the board is needed. If the proportions are incorrect, deformations can occur during drying and operation.

  To paint before or after?

We paint boards strictly before installation. If you start painting after assembly, then after drying, unpainted areas will appear - you will have to repaint.

We use Biotex and Pinotex paints for outdoor applications. The composition already includes an antiseptic. We paint in 2 layers to achieve a saturated color and uniform coloring.

They shot a separate video right from the production just on this topic:

  How to close joints when lining with an overlap board

Nontrivial question, what to do with joints? There are several ways to solve this problem. We found a picture where they are graphically presented:

We go the simplest and most aesthetic way - we make rectangular overlays, contrasting in color to the American. It looks like this:

The least time-consuming and technologically uncomplicated way - no errors, no stocks.

More recently, such material as unedged boards was used for cladding buildings for economic purposes. But today, this option is common among residential buildings. To give the house originality and style, sheathe it with an unedged board.

What is the attractiveness of this method of decoration and how to do it yourself, here are the questions to which everyone will receive an answer today.

A board that has an unfinished edge, and even the remnants of the bark are called unedged. The cost of such material is lower than fully processed and sanded. But modern designers have found application for this type of wood. Now it is fashionable to use an unedged board for cladding the facade of the house.

Properly fitted elements create an imitation of a house completely erected from wood material. Even the raw edge gives the original and a bit rough, but natural look. Like processed, unedged board has a set of positive and negative
  characteristics.

We will first deal with the advantages:

  1. Ecological cleanliness - the material is absolutely safe for human health and the environment.
  2. Vapor permeability - wood passes fumes from the interior to the outside, which allows you to create the perfect microclimate in the living rooms of the building.
  3. Heat and sound insulating properties.
  4. Simple and quick installation without the use of complex technologies and tools.
  5. The possibility of partial reconstruction if a small area is damaged.
  6. Attractive appearance.
  7. A variety of textures that depends only on the type of wood.
  8. You can sheathe a design of any geometric shape.
  9. An opportunity to combine with other facing materials.

Now consider the disadvantages:

  • the need for protective impregnation;
  • regular updating of protective layers;
  • without protection, the service life is short;
  • quickly damaged by fungus, mold, insects and rodents;
  • easily ignites and supports combustion.

Species of the tree from which it is produced

To sheathe the house outside with unedged board, you need to choose the highest quality material. An important parameter is the service life. For this purpose, only a few options are chosen:

  1. Pine is a denser structure that can withstand strong mechanical loads.
  2. Spruce is not so dense, therefore, it retains heat well.
  3. Larch is reliable in all aspects.

With a trimmed board everything is clear. If there are any defects on the surface, then you should not buy it. Unedged boards are even easier. But when choosing this material, you should pay attention to several points:

  • quality of cut - a good product should not have chips, potholes or other defects;
  • knots - there cannot be too many of them. The presence of such a drawback reduces the quality of the board, and also provokes the curvature of the material during drying;
  • cracks - reduce strength, reduce service life and violate the integrity of the material;
  • curvature - if the board has such a defect, it is difficult to fix it on the base.

Preparatory work

Before you begin decorating, you must carefully prepare everything. And this applies not only to the basis on which material will be recorded in the future.

But this is not the biggest problem. The lack of facing material can delay the performance of all work for a long time.

Necessary tools

The set of tools that will be needed to complete the house sheathing with an unedged board is very small and difficult to call it difficult. The main thing is to stock up on everyone in advance, if suddenly something was not on the farm. Here's what you need:

  • tape measure and pencil for marking;
  • building level;
  • nails
  • hammer;
  • square;
  • hacksaw for cutting wood;
  • paint brush or roller for impregnation.

We’ve figured out the tools, and now let's get down to the materials. If there is a need to sheathe the facade, then you need to think about additional thermal insulation. Even if it was not previously noticed that the house is rapidly losing heat, additional measures will help to significantly reduce heating costs.

From the materials you need:

  1. A bar with a section of 20x20 or 30x30 mm for the frame.
  2. Unedged board 30 cm wide. Everyone chooses the thickness of the material independently. There are options for sale 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 mm.
  3. Protective and antiseptic impregnations.
  4. Sealant.
  5. Mineral wool.
  6. Protective barriers for insulation.
  7. Varnish or other substance for coloring.

Consumable Calculation

  1. Butt - between the elements large gaps form, since the unedged board has an uneven edge. Therefore, here it will be necessary to use a large amount of sealant or material for caulking.
  2. Lap - this option is based on the location of the boards in a checkerboard pattern. The upper elements overlap the edges of the lower by 2 cm, this will help to make the structure as tight as possible. Therefore, the use of additional measures is necessary only at the corners of the building.
  3. “Herringbone” - this method involves laying the planks in such a way that the lower edge of one overlaps the upper edge of the previous one. The result is a siding lining effect.

The second option is the most expensive, because the number of elements is slightly larger than in the first or third. When choosing a facing method, it is necessary to calculate the total area of the walls that need to be processed. But at the same time, the area of window and door openings is subtracted.

Further, knowing the approximate area of one board, you can calculate the number of elements. But be sure to buy material with a margin of 10-15% to protect against loss of parts during transportation or fitting.

The subtleties of the design of wooden walls

If you have already chosen a wooden option for facade decoration, you should take care of the material in advance. Unedged boards require a special approach. First, it is determined to leave the bark on the board or not.

If the bark is left, then you need to select such elements where this layer holds firmly, does not exfoliate and does not crumble. In the case when the bark is not needed, then everything is cleaned and carefully sanded.

Further, absolutely all wooden parts are coated with antiseptic and water-repellent compounds. If this is not done, the material will quickly become covered with spots that are unpleasant in appearance, and eventually rot.

The tree can be painted and given an original shade or you can choose a transparent coating in the form of varnishes. In the second version, the natural color and, of course, the wood texture are preserved.

Performing house cladding

When the finishing method is chosen and all materials are purchased, they begin to perform all the work. One person will not be able to do everything himself. Therefore, you immediately need to find an assistant, and preferably two. In addition, it will be necessary to build scaffolding to make it convenient to sheathe walls at the top point.

Installation of the lathing

You can’t do without a frame. This element performs the following functions:

  • aligns the base and hides any imperfections that might appear during operation;
  • supports a heater;
  • creates a ventilation gap to remove condensate.

To build a frame work like this:

  1. 15-20 cm recede from the corner of the house. This will be the place for the first frame element.
  2. From a different angle make the same mark.
  3. The remaining area is divided into equal parts, the width of which corresponds to the width of one sheet of insulation.
  4. Fix all the details on the marked places.
  5. For fixing use the expansion bolt shield.

We warm and waterproof the house

As a heater under an unedged board, it is better to use mineral wool. The material does not ignite, which is important, because the wood quickly ignites in a fire. But such a heater quickly absorbs moisture, which means that the hydrobarrier should be laid both outside and inside.

Therefore, they work like this:

  • vapor barrier film. Lap up and down. Joints are glued with tape;
  • the insulation is closely placed between the bars of the crate, but so as not to form gaps;
  • the hydrobarrier is also laid as a vapor barrier film.

A counter grill is installed on top. This will help create a ventilation gap and hold the top trim.

Fasteners

In order to fix the boards using ordinary nails. Their value depends on the thickness of the finishing material. Each element is fixed to the crate bar with several nails. This will help make the design as reliable as possible.

Herringbone facade exterior

They perform bottom-up decoration in a way selected and convenient for the owner. If this is an overlap option, then do as follows:

  1. The bottom board is fixed at the level of the foundation or base.
  2. The distance that the upper board can cover is retreating.
  3. Fix the second board.
  4. Do the job to the top of the wall.
  5. The second layer will be staggered, that is, block all voids and at the same time go to the edges of adjacent boards by about 4-5 cm.
  6. Technology of external installation of the facade type "herringbone"

The second option for fixing the unedged board was also false, but it requires more care to do everything qualitatively and correctly. There are some nuances here.

Rail mounting

There are no differences in the installation process of the frame. The main thing is to make the markup correctly and at the same time use the building level so that all the elements are placed clearly horizontally and vertically.

Installation of siding panels

This method of decorating the house is customary to start also from the bottom of the wall. But you need to work very carefully and accurately so that the result is as high quality as possible, and moisture does not penetrate the finish.

  • the first element is fixed adhering to the horizontal;
  • the second board is pressed against the crate with the upper edge, and the lower one closes the previous board by 2-3 cm;
  • each next board fits exactly the same;
  • for sealing corners, you can purchase special corner elements;
  • at the end, all joints are treated with a polyurethane-based sealant.

For facing the facade of private houses today, a fairly large number of different materials are used. Even the simplest materials, with the right approach, can decorate the facade of any design.

As a sheathing at home, you can use boards, only during installation they need to be coated with sealant at the joints.

One of such materials is an unedged board, which has non-sawn edges. Such elements are able to give the facade of the structure excellent properties, creating a unique design. Today, lining is not only unedged, but also with other types of boards.

How to trim the house with unedged boards?

Elements that will be needed for cladding a private house:

Lumber: a - two-edged timber; b - three-edged beam; in - four-edged beam; g - unedged board; d - clean edged board; e - edged board with a blunt obzol; g - edged board with sharp overview; s - bar; and - slab lap; k - boardwrap; l - unedged sleepers; m - edged sleepers; 1 - face; 2 - edge; 3 - rib; 4 - end face.

  1. Timber.
  2. Unedged boards 30 cm wide northern species of trees.
  3. Mastic.
  4. Silicone sealant.
  5. Primer composition of deep penetration.
  6. Nails
  7. Brush
  8. Putty knife.
  9. Mineral wool.
  10. Building level.
  11. Paint.

In the outer cladding of the structure, a beam is used, which is nailed over unedged boards in increments of approximately 1.5 m. The bars should also be used at the corners of the building. The adjustment of the boards to each other does not have to be done perfectly, because the existing slots can be later coated with mastic or silicone sealant.

In most cases, unedged board has a thickness of 16, 19, 22 and 25 mm, but thicker ones can be found - 30-75 mm. Today in the market of building materials for sale there is a fairly large number of various boards, since the facade is finished with wood quite often.

The front part of a private house from unedged boards will create a unique game of chiaroscuro, which can be obtained thanks to the horizontal plating of boards. In most cases, an unedged board 30 cm wide is used to decorate the facade of a private house.

It is best to choose northern species of trees for this work that have a beautiful texture and suitable density. Such trees include species such as Siberian larch or selected butt tree forest, which does not have any defects.

Choosing the right way to mount such boards

During sheathing, the unedged board can be installed with an overlap method or placed close to each other. In quality, such lining will not be inferior to siding. The second option is more difficult to perform, but its appearance is better.

In addition to aesthetic qualities, it is necessary to take into account the practicality of all methods of cladding at home. The overlap method is more suitable for finishing facade elements in terms of practicality. This sheathing method is resistant to moisture, but you need to remember that in this case, the installation of unedged boards will need to be done on top of the waterproofing layer, while the ends of the elements are joined to the under-must trim. In the end, all existing joints will need to be treated with silicone sealant.

If necessary, the board can be coated with a primer and installed on top of the waterproofing layer.

They will need to be beaten with the front side over the previous board. As fasteners, nails are used, which are driven in the lower part. This method allows you to maintain the integrity of the structure in case the moisture level fluctuates.

The technology of cladding boards of facade elements of a private house

Unedged boards have uneven edges, which can complicate the process of joining all the elements. However, this technology simplifies this process, therefore it is recommended to use it.

The technology is as follows:

Before installing the board, it is necessary to treat it with an antiseptic, which will protect the material from moisture and various pests.

  1. The boards are coated with a primer or a special coating for protection. For these works, deep penetration primers are used, which are used to prepare mineral coatings before plastering and painting work. Primer compositions penetrate deep into the boards and act as a bonding element. As a result, it will be possible to increase the wear resistance of the base, reduce the environmental impact on the wooden coating, increase the adhesion of adhesive mixtures and paints.
  2. Waterproofing is installed on the walls. In this case, it is best to use coating type waterproofing. It is important not only to protect the walls, but also to waterproof the blinds of a private house. Mastic should be applied to the walls with a brush. If there are gaps, you will need to fill in the solution in them, and then remove the excess with a spatula.
  3. After that, the waterproofing layer should dry so that the base is not sticky when touched. It is recommended to apply 3 layers of waterproofing to avoid moisture and the formation of fungus and mold in the building. If a similar problem does arise, then you will need to purchase special building materials to combat mold.
  4. Next, a heater is installed. For insulation of facade elements, mineral wool is most often used. It does not catch fire, does not absorb moisture, is not afraid of frost.
  5. Boards are fixed over the waterproofing with nails. To do this, vertically stuff along the wall of the board, and then fix horizontal elements on them, in the direction from bottom to top. The next layer is installed on the previous one with an overlap of 20 mm.
  6. Sealant is applied to the joints of the boards. In this case, it is best to use polyurethane compounds. They have high elasticity and are able to withstand stretching and damage.
  7. Then the topcoat is applied. In most cases, varnish is used for this coating, which is applied with a brush.

How is sheeting the house with other types of boards?

This option for finishing the facade of the building is not the most economical. You should know that only specialists can perform high-quality sheathing at home with boards.

The cladding of the front of the house can be done in the form of a lining with the use of even or uncouth boards. Stacking elements is overlapped. This can be done through the use of special boards in which there are tongue-and-groove or quarter joints. This type of cladding is used for finishing work on the walls of bricks or blocks.

This type of casing combines decorative and heat-insulating functions. The last option is applied in case of warming by the "dry" method.

Cladding the facade of a private house with boards: technology

Wood is a material of organic origin, as a result of which it rots in a humid environment. Therefore, the cladding of the facade with boards will need to be produced with ventilation on the back side. In order to create such ventilation, it is necessary to install a wooden crate on the wall.

When installing ventilated facades, a windproof film is used, which is laid as a heater or directly on the base of the wall.

Thus, it will be possible to prevent the weathering of fibrous insulation materials and provide additional heat resistance to the wall. Such a film will block water, but will not be able to prevent the escape of steam from the building.

The ventilation gap between the wall and the wood paneling should be 4-5 cm. A stream of ascending air will form in it, which can remove moisture.

In the lower part of the facade you will need to provide gaps for free access of air, as well as its subsequent exit under the roof. The bottom of the hole can be closed with a mesh of metal to protect against rodents.

The lathing is made of wooden planks with a square or rectangular cross section.

To reduce water absorption, they need to be impregnated with an antiseptic and special compounds - impregnates.

If the cladding is performed without the use of insulation, then the slats of the frame must be filled vertically, observing a step of 50-60 cm. If the board is installed vertically, then you need to make a double frame.

This can be done by installing horizontal strips over vertical ones. If the wall is uneven, then it must be leveled with the help of linings from impregnated plywood.

How to strengthen the facade of the boards with your own hands?

The tree will be exposed to the environment, so you will need to provide for its protection. The facade of the tree will need to be varnished, painted or treated with decorative impregnates. Before applying a protective coating, the wood will need to be coated with a flame retardant.

An exception can only be the case when the facade is painted with special fire-resistant paint. This composition will prevent the ignition of the boards even in the event of prolonged contact with fire. Ventilated facades made of wood will definitely need to be processed in a similar way.

Cladding the front of a private house with wood has a large number of advantages. But there is a drawback, which is that the boards require updating the protective surface every few years. If roads of tree species (for example, cedar or teak) are used for cladding, then you can not think about the problem with subsequent painting. In addition, these types of wood will practically not undergo deformation for a long period of time. Today on the market you can find on sale a fairly large number of boards that have already been processed and painted.

Vertical wall sheathing with unedged boards looks more beautiful in interior spaces. For external coatings, horizontal sheathing with an unedged board is most often used, which has an original appearance when fixing with an overlap. Combined cladding can decorate the building inside and out - it will only take effort and imagination.

Finishing of facade elements with wood using boards of various sections is carried out by carpenters and joiners. To independently sheathe a private house, you need to have the appropriate work experience and some set of electric tools.

To decorate the facade of the building, as a rule, standard materials are used. But if a person wants to decorate his house in a unique way, then you can use unedged boards. The building gets a very peculiar appearance. A huge advantage is the low cost of materials.

What is unedged board

Unedged boards are a special type of lumber that have different widths and thicknesses. The main feature of the products is that they do not trim the end. Due to the different shapes and sizes, finishing the facade of a building with unedged boards can have an attractive and original appearance.

What types of wood are suitable for sheathing

For cladding, you can use different types of materials.

  • If we consider the characteristics of various species of wood, then the larch is considered the best option. The wood is not afraid of high humidity, it has a lower degree of warpage than all other species. It is easy to handle and holds nails perfectly.
  • Decorating the facade with unedged boards made of spruce is considered not a very popular option. Wood has its own impregnation. Due to the presence of a large number of knots, the boards have an attractive decorative look. After some time, noticeable cracks appear on them, so spruce unedged boards are used extremely rarely.
  • The pine will warp quickly and will soon become unusable. It is never used for exterior cladding.
  • Hardwood will look very nice. In addition, it has a long service life. It is worth remembering that hard rocks are difficult to process, and they can crack from nails if you do the job sloppy. Also a disadvantage is the high price of the material.

Covering the house outside: materials and technologies

In order to make the house attractive from the outside, you will need a beam with a section of 20x20 or 30x30 mm. It will be used for the frame of the building. The average width of the unedged board is 30 cm. The thickness of the elements can be selected depending on preferences.

In advance you need to purchase a sealant and mineral wool, antiseptic impregnation and protective. Barriers are bought for the insulation used and finishes - varnish or paint.

  • Previously, all products must be coated with a primer or a special substance for protection. This will allow several times to increase the wear resistance of elements and increase their service life.
  • Further on the walls where the board will be finished, waterproofing is installed. In this case, coating waterproofing is an ideal option. It is necessary not only to take care of protecting the walls, but also to secure the blind areas of the building. Mastic is applied to the surface of the walls with a small brush. If there are gaps, the mixture is poured into them, and all excess is removed with a spatula.
  • You need to wait until the waterproofing layer is completely dry. In order to prevent mold and mildew from building, it is advisable to apply at least three layers of the mixture.
  • Then you need to install a heater. Mineral wool will be an ideal option for outdoor insulation. She does not catch fire, she is not afraid of frost and high humidity, rainfall.

Calculation of material and components

The latter method is considered the most expensive, because you will have to use much more elements for lining.

After the most suitable cladding option is selected, the total area of the walls of the building to be processed is calculated. From the amount received, it is necessary to subtract the area that will be on the doors and windows.

Option "Herringbone"

If you know at least approximately the size of the board that will be used for the facade, then you can calculate almost the exact number of elements used for the work. The material is purchased with a small margin so that they are probably enough.

What tool will be needed

In order to finish the house with an unedged board, you need to use the minimum set of the simplest tools.

  • For marking you will need a pencil and a long tape measure.
  • Be sure to use the building level.
  • You can not do without nails, a hammer and a square.
  • Since the boards have to be cut, a hacksaw is used.
  • To apply the finish, a small roller or a special brush is used.

When do you need a frame

It is unlikely that it will be possible to do without a frame if it is planned to trim the facade with an unedged board or some other board.

It plays a very important role and helps to align the base of the building and hide all existing shortcomings that could arise as a result of long-term operation of the structure.

The frame allows you to reliably hold the insulation used. With its help, it is possible to create a special ventilation gap through which condensate will subsequently be removed.

Frame mounting

If you plan to finish the house with an unedged lap board, you need to pay special attention to the correct construction of the frame.

Wood frame

The work is carried out according to the following principle.

  • At a distance of 15-20 cm from the corner of the building, it is necessary to note the place where the very first element of the future design will be fixed.
  • Similar actions are performed with respect to the second corner.
  • That area of the building that remains is divided into the most even parts, the width of which will be the same as that of the insulation sheets.
  • At previously marked locations, you must fix the parts used with dowels.

Covering the house with an overlap board

This design for exterior decoration of the house is quite tight due to the fact that the upper elements will overlap the edges of the lower boards. Additional work will need to be carried out exclusively at the corners of the structure.

Boards are mounted using ordinary nails over a layer of waterproofing and insulation.

The boards are stacked vertically, then you can begin to fix the horizontal elements. Moving is from the bottom up. Each next layer will be installed on the previous one with an overlap, which is about 2 cm.

Final finish

After the facade planks are firmly fixed, sealant can be applied to the joints. Experts recommend the use of polyurethane sealants, which are more flexible and can withstand a fairly strong stretch. They are not so afraid of mechanical damage.

The combination of beauty and profitability

The final coating is applied. Most often, varnish is used, which must be carefully applied to each board with a small brush.

Unedged board for finishing the facade is an excellent and economical option that will look very beautiful and original. Installation does not take much time and does not require any special knowledge.
